Step 1

Take a square sheet and lay it flat on the table in a diamond position.

additional information

  • If the paper is two-colored, place the colored side facing up.
  • The corners of the square are: up, right, down, and left.

Step 2

Make a vertical valley fold by bringing the right corner over to the left corner.

Crease well, then unfold.

Step 3

Make a horizontal valley fold by bringing the bottom corner up to the top corner.

Crease well, then unfold.

additional information

  • You have just marked the diagonals of the original square.

Step 4

Turn the paper from right to left, then position it bottom edge horizontal.

additional information

  • The corners of the square are: top left, top right, bottom right, and bottom left.

Step 5

Make a vertical valley fold by bringing the right edge over to the left edge.

Crease well, then unfold.

Step 6

Make a horizontal valley fold by bringing the top edge down to the bottom edge.

Crease well, and leave it folded.

additional information

  • You now have two rectangular flaps stacked together, connected by a horizontal hinge at the top.
  • On the front and back faces of the shape, two oblique valley folds connect the middle of the hinge to the lower right and left corners of the rectangular flaps.

Step 7

Hold the fold between the thumbs and index fingers of both hands, so that the thumbs, which are in front, touch the middle of the front valley folds, and the index fingers, which are behind, touch the middle of the back valley folds.

additional information

  • The shape is now no longer on the table, but held vertically in front of us, with the hinge edge horizontal and the flaps it connects pointing towards the table.
  • The thumb and index finger of the right hand are to the right of the right oblique valley folds.
  • The thumb and index finger of the left hand are to the left of the left oblique valley folds.

Step 8

Add volume. To do this, push both hands downward symmetrically until the thumbs and index fingers meet.

additional information

  • The shape opens, resulting in four double-layered triangular flaps:
  • one to the left in the left hand,
  • one to the right in the right hand,
  • one free toward the front,
  • and one free toward the back.

Step 9

Tilt the front flap to the left and hold it against the left flap.

Step 10

Tilt the back flap to the right and hold it against the right flap.

Step 11

Place the folded shape flat on the table; the preliminary base is ready.

additional information

  • You have a square-shaped diamond with a closed tip at the top and four double-layered triangular flaps opened at the bottom.
  • You can feel a vertical valley fold in the center of the shape that runs from the closed tip to the bottom point of the square. This is the vertical axis of symmetry.
  • The four flaps are connected by the closed tip at the top and by this axis of symmetry:
  • front left flap,
  • back left flap,
  • front right flap,
  • back right flap.
